Beaches of Costa Rica
Because of its location, Costa Rica has both Pacific and Caribbean coast. The Pacific coast has a longitude of 1200 km, and the Caribbean coast 125 miles (200 km). The difference between the two is huge, both in the landscape and also the culture of the place. Both coast are relatively close to San Jose, the capital city. The Pacific coast is longer, and offer different types of beaches. The beaches located on the south Pacific normally have more rocks, whereas the beaches on the north are big light sanded beaches. Surf is great in many beaches of the country.
On the Caribbean side, the most important beaches are Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, although there are many others. The beaches on the north Caribbean of Costa Rica are strong and not so good for swimming. Cahiita National Park and Tortuguero National Park are located on the Caribbean coast. Some of the most important places for turtle nestling are found on the Caribbean Coast as well.
There are a few All Inclusive Hotels in the beaches of the Pacific coast. However, there are tons of little hotels in almost all the beaches of the country. Among the most visited one are: Tamarindo, Samara, Montezuma, Mal Pais, Santa Tereza, Manuel Antonio, Dominical and Drake Bay. There are others, less visited that are worth knowing. Marino Baulas and Marino Ballena, Corcovado, Manuel Antonio National Park and Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve are located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
Most beaches in Costa Rica do not have white sand since we are a volcanic country. Normally the sand is brownish or blackish. Bandera Azul is an environmental program that rates the cleanliness of every beach in Costa Rica. Some of the most visited beaches in the country have this award.
Costa Rica has very few islands, however, the second biggest is internationally known for its white tio sharks. It is also one of the best scuba diving places in the world: Cocos Island.
