A Place to Learn by Doing

Costa Rica has become a perfect site for university students to come and have the abroad experience. There are many US programs with a base in Costa Rica that offer Spanish courses, photography, biology and ecology classes. It is also a place where many universities have their investigation base, since Costa Rica offers a safe environment with one of the most mega biodiverse countries in the world. Environmental Organizations such as Neotropica, The Nature Conservancy and Friends of the earth international, among others, work in Costa Rica regularly.

Some of the spots where most scientific investigations take places are: Monteverde Cloud Forest, Sarapiqui, Guanacaste National Park and Osa Peninsula (Corcovado National Park).

In 1989 Costa Rican government founded an autonomous institution which purpose was to understand biological diversity, its conservation and uses. This institution was call InBio Park. A couple of years ago, the institution came back to the hands of the government and now it is undergoing major changes. A lot of founding to scientific research was gathered through this institution. Universities like Harvard have come to Costa Rica with students to learn about Herpetology and other scientific studies.

The beautiful cloud forest of Monteverde

Monteverde is a little town located in the Tilaran Mountain Range, about 4 hours from San Jose on a bumpy road. Monteverde is considered a very important Eco touristic destiny in Costa Rica, and was once on the list of the 1000 places to visit on a life time. It is worldly known for its Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which is one of the most important natural reserves in the area.

This little town was founded in 1950 by 11 Quakers from Alabama. The close by areas were previously habited by Costa Ricans who came with the golden fever, but the Quakers established on the region and began what was for a long time the Cheese Factory of Monteverde.

When you visit Monteverde and the main town Santa Elena, you will be experiencing one of the very few patches of cloud forest on the world, full of biodiversity and endemic flora and fauna. Also, it has one of the most beautiful views in Costa Rica, to the Nicoya Golf.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located in the Puntarenas Province close to the touristic town of Santa Elena in Monteverde. The roads to visit the Reserve are very rustic, mostly made out of grave. It is a great place to enjoy the wonders of nature, surrounded by the lush green areas of the Cloud Forest. Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home of one of the most beautiful woodlands of the country, where visitors are able to see orchids, bromeliads, ferns, vines, and mosses. It has numerous crystal clear streams, and its large altitudinal gradient has helped produce an extremely high biodiversity.
