    Help us help!

Costa Rica is one of the most developed countries in Latin America. It is also the home of one of the headquarters the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and it is very famous for its conservation policies. However, it has many challenges to overcome. For example, the rates of poverty is growing constantly.

According with the National Statistics and Census Institute (INEC) the number is as high as 1.1 million people in Costa Rica live in poverty, which means around 1/5 of its population. Poverty has a direct impact on the environment and the resources. That is why, there are many ONGs that try to help and educate. Those organizations are open for volunteers around the world that would like to come and help.

Besides visiting the country to relax and take a break, some visitors come with the idea of doing some volunteer work. Some come with the idea of having a whole volunteer semester or a one month volunteer experience. Traveling with meaning is something we all should practice at least once in a lifetime. Even though, most volunteering programs have a fee, you may do volunteer work on a small budget. The fee helps to pay for services and other expenses that are necessary to cover during your stay.

Some students take advantage of these volunteering programs to obtain the necessary work experience they require to work after graduate. When that is the case, it is an intership and it is certified by the organization that hire the volunteer work. In order cases, volunteering can be a great way to practice a new language (in this case Spanish).

Volunteering is not for everyone. It is an experience that will change the life of those who does it. They need to keep an open mind.
