    Three crater active volcano

     

    Cartago Province, where that capital of the country lied some time ago, has a lot to offer. Cartago City is the religious capital of Costa Rica, and there is La Basilica de La Virgen de los Angeles. Beside other nice places such as Ujarras Ruins, Orosi Church and Cachi Dam, the province has two active volcanoes: the Turrialba and de Irazu. Both are very different but because of its closeness they are also called the Twin Volcanoes.

    The area is great for hiking and mountain biking, but mostly it is a place where many tourists enjoy some unique views of active volcanoes. On the picture the two craters are shown; it was taken from Irazu Volcano National Park.

  • Miravalles

    Las Hornillas Sector

     

    Miravalles is one of the active volcanoes of the country. It is has an elevation of 2,023 m or 6,653 feet, which makes it the highest mountain in the Guanacaste Province.  It can be reached from Bijagua or from Bagaces. In the Pailas sector visitors can see volcanic geysers, boiling mud, fumaroles and of course, thermal waters.

    One of the main attractions of the places is Hornillas, where the visitor can walk inside the active crater, and see a few volcanic activity (not lava) in the area.

    At the Miravalles Volcano, the ICE (electricity national company), has a geothermal power plant projectunique in the country.

    The area is rich in biodiversity and a land full of attractions for nature lovers. There are few hotels, restaurants and hot springs small resorts.

  • Poas Volcano

    The second biggest crater in the world

     

    Poas Volcano is known to be the second biggest crater in the world or the first volcanic crater the the world (290 metres or 950 ft deep) . It is located in the Alajuela Province at 1 hour and 15 minutes from San Jose. The Poas Volcano is protected by the figure of National Park, which is approximately 65 square kilometres or 16,000 acres. It`s summit is around 2,700 metres or 8,900 ft.

    It has three main craters: the main crater, Von Frantzuis crater, which is extinct and the Botos crater, which is a beutiful green lagoon. The last eruption of the main crater was during 1952-54 and the Botos Crater was 7.500 years ago; however, there have been some indications that it is slowly building into a probable new eruption.

    Thear ea around the National Park has beautiful landscapes and it is great place to buy strawberries and plums. There are also many attractions around it.

    Volcanic Paradise

     

    Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, the largest volcano in northwest Costa Rica, is a remote volcanic complex in the Guanacaste Range. Rincon de la Vieja National Park is located on the Cordillera de Guanacaste, a province of Guanacaste and Alajuela, 27 km northeast of the city of Liberia. Thermal mud pools, waterfall swimming areas and freshwater lakes are also available for visitor use.

    The official road to the National Park winds 27 km east out of Liberia. The way is covered by this white dust and chalky earth. The most interesting are of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano is Las Pailas (Kitchen Stoves), which includes 8 hectares of hot springs, boiling mud pots, sulfur lakes and vapor geysers which stain the rocks with red, green and yellow colors; overall it offers a bizarre geological phenomenon unique in Costa Rica.

    Among the highlights of the Rincon de la Vieja National Park include: hot springs, dry forest, volcanic scenery, and many different species of flora.

  • Tenorio Volcano

    Tenorio Volcano and Celeste River

     

    Mostly unknown, Tenorio Volcano is one of the 7 active volcanoes in Costa Rica. It is located on Alajuela Province just in the border with Guanacaste. There are various ways to visit the National Park where the volcano lies; it can be from Bijagua Town or La Fortuna, among others. The Celeste River is an amazing jewel product of the combination of two different rivers coming from the volcano that carry special chemicals. When the combine, there is a chemical reaction that produces the wonderful color the entire river is: celeste or light blue.

    Once in the National Park, there is a trail of 7 kilometers where the visitors can enjoy the cold beautifully colored waters of the river and see other interesting points along the way, such as the natural thermal waters, the fumarolas, and the beginning of the river, etc.

    The most active volcano in the country

     

    Almost at the same time that Arenal Volcano stop its major activity, Turrialba Volcano began to be very active with some major eruptions of volcanic dust. The volcano is located close to the town of the same name, in the Cartago province.

    The volcano is protected by the Turrialba National Park. Nowadays, the area is closed because of the danger of the eruptions, even though the last major lava eruption tookplace 3.500 years ago. It has an elevation of 3,340 m (10,958 ft).

    Turrialba town is also known to be the second adventure capital of Costa Rica, next to Arenal, and compiting with Providencia. Tours like white water rafting, canyoning, biking tour, ziplinning are famous in the area.
